Viscosity of Picoliter Volumes Measured by Nondegenerate Two-Wave Mixing 6. AUTHORS

چکیده
Using nondegenerate two-wave mixing in colloidal suspensions we measure the viscosity of liquids with as little as 20 picoliters of volume. In addition, changes in the frequency signature with intensity are observed which are interpreted in terms of selffocusing effects. Typical viscosity measurements require volumes ranging from tens of milliliters to liters of liquid. For many applications in biology, chemistry, and medicine where there may only be very small amounts available, this is impractical. We have developed a technique which measures the absolute viscosity of solutions to within ten percent of previously tabulated values with sample volumes as small as 20 picoliters. This technique relies on the forces associated with radiation pressure. The technique is accurate and not difficult to perform or interpret and is based on the nonlinear optical effect of nondegenerate two-wave mixing (NDTWM). The systems under consideration are solvents containing suspensions of polystyrene microspheres. In the experiments we performed, the solvents under consideration were mixtures of water and glycerol. A dielectric particle within the solution of interest will feel a force exerted on it in a light field with a strong intensity gradient in the direction of the gradient. The force is given by >>:

Temperature and Spectral Dependence of the Nonlinear Index of Ruby Via Nondegenerate Two Wave Mixing 6. AUTHORS
We have studied the nonlinear index of refraction of pink ruby between 565 nm and 610 nm using nondegenerate two wave mixing at 77 K and 294 K. Our new results support the model originally proposed by Venkatesan and McCall based on the large cross section of the transition from the Kramers doublets to the charge transfer band. In addition, we show that two-wave mixing can be used for accurate d...
متن کاملHigh-gain nondegenerate two-wave mixing in Cr:YAIO(3).
A gain of 22 times was obtained by nondegenerate two-wave mixing in Cr:YAlO(3). To our knowledge, this is the largest cw two-wave mixing gain obtained in a bulk solid-state nonphotorefractive material. The measured gain appears to be limited by beam breakup that is due to spatial nonuniformities in the nonlinear refractive-index change that are the result of inhomogeneities in the crystal. Pred...
متن کاملMagneto-mechanical mixing and manipulation of picoliter volumes in vesicles.
Superparamagnetic beads in giant unilamellar vesicles are used to facilitate magnetic manipulation, positioning, agitation and mixing of ultrasmall liquid volumes. Vesicles act as leakproof picoliter reaction vessels in an aqueous bulk solution and can be deliberately conveyed by an external magnetic field to a designated position. Upon application of an external magnetic field the beads align ...
متن کاملEnhancement of four-wave mixing and line narrowing by use of quantum coherence in an optically dense double-? solid.
We have demonstrated enhanced nondegenerate four-wave mixing by use of a resonant probe in a double- ? system consisting of an optically dense spectral hole-burning solid. The observed probe diffraction efficiency is ~16% in amplitude at 6 K, which is higher than for an off-resonant probe in a ? -type scheme. We have also observed two-photon coherence line narrowing, which has potential applica...
متن کاملEnhancement of nondegenerate four-wave mixing based on electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium atoms.
We report an experimental observation of the enhancement of nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a lambda-type three-level system of rubidium atoms. We measured both the linear susceptibility Im chi(D)((1)) (absorption) and the third-order nonlinear coefficient chi(D)((3)) separately for the NDFWM process at a low atomic density. We f...
